Will a golf simulator fit your room?

Measure the room and type the numbers in. The Bay Sizer checks them against what launch monitor makers and simulator retailers publish, draws the room to scale, and lists the launch monitors whose own distances fit.

Fit your room

Short on space

Not enough published data to check

How the Bay Sizer decides

There is no single industry standard for simulator room sizes, so the Bay Sizer does not invent one. For each dimension it compares your room with every published figure we could find and tells you how many it meets. “Fits” means it meets every published minimum; “Comfortable” means it also meets every recommended size.

The launch monitor list works from each maker's own distances: how far the unit sits behind the ball and how much ball flight it needs before the screen. Where a maker publishes none, the model is listed as not checkable rather than guessed. Retailer figures for a specific model are used only when they ask for more space than the maker.

Ceiling height

What the source saysMinimumComfortable
Minimum 8-9 ft with limited swings: with a lower ceiling a driver may not be swingable, though shorter irons still work. 10 ft or more is recommended. Taller or upright golfers 'may require a minimum of 10 feet or more'. Commercial bays: minimum 10 ft.1 8′ 10′
'you'll need ceilings at least eight feet high'; 'Nine-foot-high ceilings are optimal.'2 8′ 9′
Size table: minimum 8 ft 6 in, recommended 9 ft, ideal 10 ft+. The body text conflicts with the table: it calls 8 ft 'the absolute minimum for most golf simulators', 8.5 ft 'more accommodating' and 9 ft+ 'optimal'. The launch-monitor-type table gives 10 ft height for beside-ball photometric, ceiling-mounted photometric and behind-golfer radar systems. No golfer-height formula; test with your longest club.3 8′6″ 9′
Carl's Place recommends ceilings of 9-10 ft, with at least 14 ft of width and 18 ft of depth. It does not recommend enclosures lower than 96 in (8 ft). Leave at least 2-3 in between the enclosure top and the ceiling, or about 6-7 in for the Curved Enclosure Kit.4 — 9′
'Most golfers need a 9-10 foot ceiling to swing comfortably.' The ideal room is 10 ft high (14 ft W x 18 ft D). Taller or upright swingers may need more; no figure is given.5 9′ 10′
'Most golfers need a minimum ceiling height of 9 to 10 feet'; '10 feet is the magic ceiling-height number'. 8.5 ft can work only for shorter players with compact swings or limited club selection. Taller or steep-plane players may need 10-12 ft. PlayBetter SimStudio and Carl's Place enclosures need at least 8 ft of ceiling. Garmin Approach R50: 10 ft is ideal, many golfers manage at 9 ft, some at 8.5 ft. Square Golf: 10 ft is ideal, 9 ft or 8.5 ft may work.6 9′ 10′
'Most indoor golf simulators require a clearance space of 9 feet tall minimum to function.' Golfers about 5 ft 8 in and shorter may be fine at 9 ft; taller golfers 'may need 10 or even 11 feet'. Suggested full room: 10 ft H x 14 ft W x 17-18 ft D.7 9′ 10′
Minimum 9 ft, recommended 10 ft+. Its golfer-height table is in swingHeightModels. The page says the driver head rises about 3-4 ft above head height and recommends a 6-12 in comfort buffer; hitting mats add 1-2 in. The page is internally inconsistent in places and has no publication date.8 9′ 10′
Minimum 9 ft, better 9.5-10 ft, best 10 ft+; the article's 'sweet spot' is about 10 ft. 'For most golfers, 8 feet is too low for a full golf simulator room.' 9 ft may work for average-height golfers without a steep swing, but should be tested.9 9′ 10′
Minimum net height 9 ft, which 'will depend on your height'. Recommended room height 10 ft.10 9′ 10′
Minimum 9 ft for shorter golfers or flatter swing planes; 10 ft is comfortable for most golfers; 10.5-12 ft is ideal for taller players. 8 ft is workable only for limited setups and short-game or putting practice.11 9′ 10′
'you will definitely want 9+ feet of ceiling height.'12 9′ —
UK guide: minimum 2.8 m (9.2 ft), ideally 3 m (9.8 ft). Taller players or upright swings should add headroom. Standard UK rooms are around 2.4 m. Test by making a slow full driver swing indoors.13 9′2″ 9′10″
Ideal space for a full projected simulator: 3 m (9 ft 10 in) high, 4 m+ wide, 5-6 m+ deep. No golfer-height formula is given.14 — 9′10″

Width

What the source saysTeeMinimumComfortable
Offset hitting: 'A minimum width of 9-10 feet is required for a golf simulator.' In narrower rooms, offset the hitting position to avoid hitting walls on the backswing and follow-through.5 Offset tee 9′ —
Offset hitting: a room 9-10 ft wide is the minimum; adjust the tee placement for a compact space. The size table gives minimum 10 ft, recommended 12 ft and ideal 14 ft+. An enclosure or hitting net needs about 10 ft of width plus at least 6 in of buffer on each side.3 Offset tee 9′ —
UK guide: minimum width 3 m (9.8 ft). The page does not distinguish centre and offset hitting.13 Not specified 9′10″ —
Offset hitting: minimum 10 ft, with the hitting area offset from centre.1 Offset tee 10′ —
Offset hitting: with the tee placed to the left or right, 'you can get away with a space 10 feet wide'.2 Offset tee 10′ —
Minimum width 10 ft, recommended 15 ft. The page does not distinguish centre and offset hitting.10 Not specified 10′ 15′
Offset hitting: 10 ft can work for one golfer if the hitting position is offset. 12 ft is 'more comfortable for most setups' (the article's sweet spot), and 14 ft+ is best.9 Offset tee 10′ 12′
Centre hitting: TruGolf setups are typically centred, splitting the width evenly on both sides of the mat. Minimum 10 ft; 12 ft is a strong starting point; 12-16 ft is recommended; 14-16 ft gives extra freedom, especially when right- and left-handed golfers share the room.11 Centre tee 10′ 12′
Minimum 12 ft, recommended 15 ft+, with about 5-6 ft of clearance on each side of the hitting position.8 Not specified 12′ 15′
Ideal space for a full projected simulator: 4 m (about 13 ft) wide or more. Example: a 16:10 image on a 3 m-tall screen needs a 4.8 m-wide room.14 Not specified — 13′1″
Centre hitting: 14 ft or more is recommended so the tee can be centred for right- and left-handed golfers. Launch monitors or setups that require centre hitting, especially for full driver swings, may need more than 14 ft. Commercial bays serving both hands: at least 14 ft. The page cites about 7 ft of swing area around the golfer in every direction for most launch monitors, and 9 ft for the Garmin R50 and Rapsodo MLM2PRO.1 Centre tee — 14′
Centre hitting: 'we recommend at least 14 feet of width'. Rooms narrower than 14 ft should use an offset arrangement, with the hitting area moved toward one side and the launch monitor and software set to match. Enclosures are not recommended narrower than 100 in. Subtract 4-6 in (2-3 in per side) from the available width when choosing an enclosure.4 Centre tee — 14′
Centre hitting: '14 feet is ideal if you want your tee centered and to accommodate both right- and left-handed golfers.'5 Centre tee — 14′
Centre hitting: 'a 14' feet wide space is essential' for a centred tee serving right- and left-handed players.3 Centre tee 14′ —
Centre hitting: with the tee in the centre of the room, 'your space should be at least 14 feet wide'.2 Centre tee 14′ —

Depth

What the source saysMinimumComfortable
Minimum length 12 ft, recommended 15 ft, allowing 'about 10 feet for hitting and 1-2 feet of clearance for the golf balls'.10 12′ 15′
Minimum 12 ft, better 16 ft (the article's sweet spot), best 18 ft+. 12 ft can work for compact setups; 15-16 ft is 'much more comfortable' for most indoor builds.9 12′ 16′
Minimum 12-15 ft, ideal 15-20 ft. Hitting mat to screen 8-10 ft. Space behind the golfer: the summary says '5 to 6 feet minimum' while the body text says 6-8 ft.11 12′ 15′
Minimum 15 ft: about 1 ft behind the screen, 10 ft from screen to ball and 4 ft behind the ball. Recommended 18-20 ft: 1 ft behind the screen, 10-12 ft from screen to ball and 7 ft behind the ball. Impact screen to back wall: 12-16 in. Launch monitor positions listed on the page: Garmin R10 6-8 ft behind the tee; Rapsodo MLM2PRO 6.5-8.5 ft behind; Full Swing KIT 10 ft behind; Garmin R50 about 1.5 ft to the side; Foresight Falcon 4 ft in front of the tee; NVISAGE N1 2 ft in front; Trackman iO mount centre 3 ft 3 in in front of the tee; Uneekor EYE XR/XO 3.5 ft from the tee (the page contradicts itself on front versus behind).1 15′ 18′
Size table: minimum 15 ft, recommended 16 ft, ideal 18 ft+. The body text elsewhere gives a 12 ft minimum and says rooms of 15 ft or less are 'not uncommon'. Breakdown: screen 12-16 in from the rear wall, tee 10-12 ft from the screen, 7 ft behind the tee. By launch-monitor type: beside-ball photometric 15-16 ft, ceiling-mounted photometric 15-16 ft, Doppler radar behind the golfer 16-19 ft.3 15′ 16′
Minimum 15 ft, recommended 18-20 ft: 1.5 ft behind the screen, 10-12 ft from stance to screen, and 2-3 ft at the back wall for projector mounting or storage. Launch monitor distance behind the golfer: radar 7-8 ft, camera/overhead 2-3 ft, Trackman iO 4-6 ft, portable floor units 4-5 ft. Cites Trackman-class radar rooms at 'at least 15 feet wide, 10 feet high, and 18 feet deep'.8 15′ 18′
Ideal depth 5-6 m+ (about 16-20 ft). Radar unit typically 2.2-2.5 m behind the ball; ball to screen typically 3 m; about 400 mm between the back of the screen and the wall; about 2 m of social space beyond the hitting area.14 — 16′5″
Suggested room: 10 ft H x 14 ft W x 17-18 ft D. Tee about 10 ft from the impact screen, which sits about 1 ft from the back wall.7 — 17′
Carl's Place recommends at least 18 ft of depth. Do not stand closer than 10 ft from the screen; 10-12 ft is recommended. The DIY Enclosure needs at least 8.25 in behind it for the rear fitting, and the Pro Enclosure at least 9.5 in. A 5 ft-deep enclosure 'may not be sufficient' for wedges and higher irons; 10 ft or deeper is suggested for novices.4 — 18′
The ideal 18 ft is made up of 12-16 in between impact screen and wall, 10-12 ft between tee and screen, and at least 7 ft behind the tee. Cutting depth too much 'can increase the risk of ball ricochet and impact screen bounce-back'.5 — 18′
FAQ: most golfers are comfortable with '18 feet of depth', depending on the system. Trackman 4: screen-to-unit distance 5.5 m (18 ft)+. Trackman iO: screen to ball 3.0 m (10 ft)+, behind the ball 'enough for a comfortable swing'. In a 12 x 12 ft room, short irons may be possible but most players will feel constrained.15 — 18′
'a space with a length or depth of 18 feet should give you plenty of room': about 2 ft behind the screen, tee 10-12 ft from the screen, 7 ft behind the tee. SkyTrak+ sits '16 inches to the side of your teeing area'. Doppler radar units must sit 'at least seven feet behind you'.2 — 18′
